1984

On August 23, 1984, I was born. I can't believe that I'll be thirty soon. I'll be celebrating in truly age appropriate style: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pizza party at Cici's. I began to wonder what was going on at Tarleton 30 years ago. We have so many traditions. I wanted to see what has and hasn't stuck around and if any neat things happened.

The '84 Grassburr has activities from the '83-'84 school year. Looks like homecoming week had a lot of the same activities: bonfire, parade, football, queen and plenty of Poo antics. The '85 Grassburr has activities from the '84-'85 school year. A lot of cool things happened in the Fall of 1984. The GoGo's gave a concert. It would be awesome to have a big named talent on campus to give a concert! Tarleton beat Sul Ross 37-14 at the homecoming game.

I'm looking forward to another thirty years and can't wait to see what Tarleton will be doing then, too. #TarletonRocks #Purple Pride #Turning30

Tarleton Thursdays: Did You Know?

Texan Transition Week is just around the corner, and campus departments are preparing to greet the Class of 2017 by making plans for an activities-filled week and developing strategies to ensure the new students' time at Tarleton is rewarding -- academically, professionally, and personally.

Welcoming students to campus is a long-standing Tarleton tradition that has evolved over time. For example, when the 1963 Freshman Class arrived on campus, they received registration help, took campus tours, attended a general assembly and departmental presentations, and participated in social events like swimming at the college pool and a dance.

Curious about what previous students experienced at Tarleton? No problem. You can learn much about Tarleton's past by reading The J-TAC articles (1919-2009) online at UNT's Portal to Texas History.

Here's how:
-- Click this direct link to the J-TAC (1919-2009) collection at the portal.
-- Or, click "J-TAC Newspaper Archive" on the library's database page.
-- Use the "Advanced Search" feature to search for topics, choose specific time periods, or set other search limits.
-- Or, browse for articles by year and issue.

If you have questions, give us a call 254-968-9249 or contact us with our Ask a Librarian service. Enjoy!

Peanuts and Cracker Jacks

Tonight, Dr. Dottavio will be throwing the first pitch at the Texas Rangers versus the Cincinatti Reds game. 1,000 or so Faculty, Staff, Students, Family, and Supporters of Tarleton State University will be in attendance at the game tonight. Among those thousand will be several of the Library staff.

If baseball is your thing, you can find several resources on the topic in the library. The following is a video from our Films on Demand database. In 1941, President Roosevelt threw out the first pitch at the Yankees versus Senators game. Over 32,000 were in attendance at the season opener that day.

We hope to see many of you Texans and Texanns out there tonight. Be ready to show Arlington, Texas what kind of spirit Tarleton State University and its community has.
Go Rangers!
