The New York Times newspaper has been in continuous operation since 1851. If you're looking for primary sources on a significant event in US or world history after that year, then the New York Times probably has an article about it.
The Dick Smith Library has access to the historical New York Times from 1851 through 2014 via the ProQuest database, which can be found here.
When you first open the database you'll see the basic search screen. If you know the exact title of the article you're looking for, then this screen might work for you. If not, then you should click on the advanced search link.

The advanced search page gives you the ability to search with multiple key words connected with Boolean operators, search within a specific date range, and select the type of document you're looking for (article, advertisement, etc.).
