Library Subject Guides: Black History

If you're not sure where to start your research on the library's website, one of the things you might want to check out is our subject guides. For African American History Month, we're highlighting our Black History Subject Guide page, which includes a list of Black history-focused databases, professional journals, and other useful resources.

Although a search in Discovery can be an excellent way to dive into a topic, sometimes it's better or easier to explore specific databases. Here are just a few of the databases listed on our Black History Subject Guide:
  • African American Archives - Primary sources relating to African American History from the 1670s-1940s, and originating from North America and the Caribbean.
  • Race Relations in America - Primary sources relating to the history of the civil rights movement in America. Includes audio records, photographs, scrapbooks and more from 1943-1970.
  • Slavery in American and the World: History, Culture & Law - Legal materials on slavery in the United States and the English-speaking world. Includes cases, legal commentary, books and pamphlets.
  • African American Music Reference - Reference texts on jazz, ragtime, gospel, spirituals, and more. Search or browse specific people, historical events, genres, titles, publishers, or instruments.
