Top Ten Tuesday – Summer Foods

What a great time of year. Hot days and warm nights with daylight until 9pm! Summers always include lots of family get-to-gathers, with great food and traditions. It's time to get the grill out! Here is a list of favorite Summer Foods. Do you have a favorite? Post a comment and share.

  1. Anything on the grill – burgers, hotdogs, steaks. They just can't be beat.
  2. Apple Pie – Nothing says America better.
  3. Watermelon – ice cold with just a dash of salt…yum
  4. Tomatoes - either homegrown, or the ones on the vine.
  5. Ice-cream – Homemade Vanilla, a family tradition that cannot be beat.
  6. Summer Squash – Yellow squash and zucchini- I hope the gardens come in soon.
  7. Strawberry Shortcake – Its almost healthy...
  8. Peaches – Texas peaches are the best
  9. Avocados – buttery goodness
  10. Grilled Chicken, ribs, etc. – I know it's also number one – but anything on a grill is worth mentioning twice!

I hope you have good times this summer! Enjoy.

The Trogdon House will be renovated!

How wonderful that our Tarleton president and his wife, the Dottavios, have elected to renovate the Trogdon House and live in it! It is a beautiful home and a Tarleton treasure. I was shocked to learn that there was serious consideration given to demolishing this home some years ago (thanks for the info, Thomas Schilb!) Do not tell Dallas, but new is not automatically better. And sometimes, saving and renovating is the very greenest option.

The United States is blessed with many significant historical sites, but we lose some every year. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has published its 22nd Annual List of Endangered Sites. You can help preserve them!

Spend your summer saving something wonderful! Tarleton is showing you how it is done.

Stenholm Visits Library

Former U.S. Congressman Charles Stenholm visited the Dick Smith Library on Monday, May 4. The Library recently received the desk Mr. Stenholm used while serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Texas' then-District 17 from 1979 to 2005. Library staff put some of his memorabilia on display along with the desk in the Special Collections Suite on the lower level of the library. The photo shows Stenholm sitting in his former office chair at his desk in the library.

The Library also has Stenholm's legislative papers, which Collections Archivist Gary Spurr is working on indexing and describing.

Mr. Stenholm is a 1959 graduate of Tarleton, which at that time was a two-year college. He majored in Agricultural Education and served as his class vice-president. He was tied for #3 in Honor Points, and a member of the Barons. He was President of the Tarleton "T" Association (athletes who have earned a letter) and Sentinel of the Tarleton Collegiate FFA Chapter. He was an end on the Plowboys football team his second year, and a forward on the basketball team both years. He was a Captain in the Second Battle Group of the ROTC his second year, and a member of First Platoon Company G his first year. In his first year, he was also listed in "Who's Who in Grade Points," tied for first with six others.
